Drug abuse is rampant among Indian teenagers
The Youth of India are the future leaders of our country, but every year we lose several of these smart, brilliant youth to Drug abuse. Drug abuse is extremely common among the teenagers of India.
There are several contributing factors that influence these teenagers, but one of the leading contributing factor is peer pressure, friends can change a person for the better or worse, and in this case, definitely for the worse. When the youngsters see the people of their peer groups abusing all sorts of drugs, they start to label drugs as “cool” and when one refuses to use, they are labelled as “uncool” or “losers” and reputation means everything to teenagers and adolescents and they will do anything to keep up their reputation, even things that are harmful to them.
Another important cause for the increase of drug use/ abuse among teenagers is stress. The stress from school, parents and other social groups makes the teen feel pressurized, and as if they can’t seek comfort in anyone, they see drugs as a way out, even if it harms their wellbeing.
There are a few things that can be done to help these teenagers, one of them being making mental health care centers more accessible and affordable. If the stigma that comes with rehabilitation centers is removed, teenagers will feel a lot better about going to these places and seeking help from professionals.
