India adolescents need proper sexual education and reproductive health awareness

Sex education can be defined as a keen understanding of lifelong sexual health including contraceptive methods, HIV/AIDS prevention programs, and family planning in adults. In India, sex education is still considered taboo and stigma are attached to it. Today adolescents comprise of total 18% of the world population and India has the largest adolescent population out of all countries. This makes it important to teach them about sexual health and make them aware of different aspects of it. The sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescents in India are currently overlooked or are not understood by the Indian healthcare system. And if some schools sex education is taught then, sexual health is not openly discussed due to cultural and social norms.

This sort of incomplete information leads to misjudgments making them less likely to adopt healthy sex practices and attitudes. Sex education is also important for having a healthy lifestyle, emotional connection, and communication in interpersonal relationships. Sex education is gets challenged not just by the school but also by parents and teachers. Some societies view it as a shame to Indian values and it’s culture. The majority of parents do not provide any sort of education regarding it and In this age of advanced social media, unhealthy and misunderstood attitudes are easily developed which creates a need for it to be taught by a professional.
