Prenatal Sex Determination: A Heinous Crime!

Going by popular opinion, nothing can be compared to the happiness of holding your baby in your arms for the first time. So why, then, are parents barred from knowing the gender of their child before they are born? In fact, it is also termed as a crime in some countries, including India. But since when did the urge of knowing about one’s own baby become a crime?

Prenatal sex determination was banned in India around 1994, following an upsurge in the killing of female fetuses. This mass infanticide was deemed as a result of the deep-rooted patriarchal influence that was strongly implanted with many Indian counterparts. These were the people that regarded daughters as a burden- given that, she had to be married off with large dowries and would ultimately serve another household. These people soon learned the after effects of their heinous crime in a hard way. They were soon having difficulties in finding a suitable bride for their sons, as a lot of people, like them, had killed off their daughters before birth. The sex ratio was also utterly imbalanced, resulting in numerous other problems as well.

But has the banning of prenatal sex determination completely thwarted off the hyenas from wanting to kill off their daughters? No! Many people get these tests done illegally, even though The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Acts warns all practitioners completely against it. According to reports, nearly 210 doctors have been convicted of this crime since 2003. Needless to say, many more cases are not even reported. There are also people who don’t even seem to require a proper doctor for getting this test done. For instance, take the example of one such monster that was caught by the Uttar Pradesh police just a few days back. This man was the father to five girls and did not want his pregnant wife to give birth to a sixth one. Failing to find a doctor that would commit this heinous crime for him, the fanatic went on to slit open his wife’s stomach.

Quite certainly, this is not just a one instance tale. There are definitely more such monsters, lurking in the shadows; most of them devotedly protected by their wives. But it’s time that these wives let go of these devotions. It’s time that these women speak up. It is time that they make these monsters pay for the slaughter their innocent daughters
